A leading private security company based in South Africa is looking for a dedicated and experienced Shaft Unit Leader to join their Mining Division in the Gauteng Westrand area. This position requires a highly skilled individual with a solid background in security operations and the mining industry. The Shaft Unit Leader will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of a shaft, ensuring safety, compliance, and operational excellence.
As the Shaft Unit Leader, you will oversee the smooth running of operations at a mining shaft, ensuring that safety protocols, risk assessments, and audits are consistently adhered to. You will manage personnel, conduct investigations, and maintain client relationships, all while ensuring compliance with company policies and industry regulations. Your leadership will play a key role in maintaining a secure environment and supporting operations through effective incident management and compliance processes.
- Oversee daily operations of the mining shaft to ensure smooth functioning.
- Conduct audits, including underground explosives audits and shaft surface audits.
- Complete and maintain risk assessments, PTO’s, and deficiency reports.
- Manage the WFM system, including creating duty rosters and rostering employees.
- Maintain strong and professional relationships with clients, ensuring customer satisfaction.
- Manage incidents effectively and in accordance with company protocols.
- Ensure adherence to the company’s disciplinary code and standard operating procedures (SOP’s).
- Liaise with HR to manage disciplinary inquiries and ensure proper resolution.
- Handle informers and intelligence operations, including monitoring illegal mining activities.
- Conduct underground operations, including the monitoring and management of illegal mining activities.
- Perform night shift duties and be available for standby work as required.
- Ensure compliance with court procedures when necessary.
| Required Skills and Qualifications |
- PSIRA Certification – Grade A (compulsory).
- Grade 12 or equivalent qualification.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar role, preferably within the mining industry.
- Experience working in a gold mine is compulsory.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong working knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, etc.).
- Experience with gold-related investigations and clandestine operations will be an advantage.
- Sound knowledge of camera and alarm systems.
- Business Firearm competency (handgun, shotgun, and rifle).
- Must be able to undergo a polygraph test.
- Ability to communicate and present at all levels.
- Ability to work under pressure, particularly in high-stress situations.
- Willingness to work long hours when required.
- Clean disciplinary, criminal, and credit record.
- Driver’s license and own reliable transport (compulsory).
- Must have own accommodation within the surrounding area.
- In-depth knowledge of illegal mining and related security protocols.
- Experience in managing underground operations.
- Ability to work in a high-pressure environment while maintaining calm and focus.
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to manage a team effectively.
